In a corporate environment, especially in the process of leadership coaching and mentoring, there is a temptation to place the focus on the IQ (the intelligence quotient) and completely ignore the EQ (the emotional intelligence quotient). However, it’s not enough for your employees to be intellectually competent — without the proper emotional intelligence, corporate communications will break down.
So what is the difference between Intelligence quotient and emotional quotient (emotional intelligence)? Well IQ is something that you are probably aware of, an IQ is derived from test scores designed to test intelligence, such as SAT and/or ACT. EQ, or emotional intelligence is how well a person is able to express or control the emotions of themselves and others. you can see why it would be such a big problem to a company’s culture if employees emotional intelligence is neglected entirely.
This is where soft skills training comes in: because things such as personality traits, social graces & etiquette, managing people, and leadership skills are not easily quantifiable (all of which are traits that comprise the emotional intelligence quotient), they’re considered “soft” (as opposed to “hard”) skills. Proper soft skills training contributes to the overall success of the organization; those organizations that deal with face-to-face interactions with both customers and colleagues get the most out of soft skills training.
Here, then, is our list of tips and tricks for efficient soft skills training:
- Begin by telling the employee that effective leadership, and team participation, starts with Self. Encourage such positive traits as loyalty to the company, integrity/honesty in all dealings, and self-management/discipline to get the tasks done.
- Next, enforce positive interpersonal skills as well. Proper interpersonal skills that contribute to the success of the company include, but is certainly not limited to, embracing cultural diversity, exercising discretion in interoffice leadership, and positive negotiation skills.
- Finally, be sure you, as an employer, have traits that positively encourage soft skills, as well. Remember that you will lead through your actions and your employees will adopt your passion. Encourage a good attitude, the ability to train and be trained, and a strong work ethic, and your employees will naturally follow.
